Overview

Tsum Valley Trek is the new and sacred Himalayan pilgrimage valley trek opened for foreigner only in 2008. Tsum Valley situated to the North of Gorkha district is beyond Mount Ganesh in Manaslu region. Tsum Valley also called hidden valley is secretly situated between the Himalayas. Tsum valley trek offers trekkers an opportunity to view the spectacular mountains on all direction: Ganesh Himal to the South, Mt. Bauddha and Mount Himal Chuli to the West and Sringi Himal to North. Tsum valley is traditionally rich in culture, religion and sacred arts is inhabited by “Tsumbas” who are heavily Tibetan and practice Bon religion and have their own language. Interesting fact about these tribes is they still adopt polyandry marriage system in which all the brothers from a family marry a single girl.

Tsum valley once remained a part of Tibet is really an unexplored and mysterious area and is very different from any other area of the Himalayan region. The longest mani walls (over 250m) at Dzong and Phurpe, including wonderful monasteries, chortens and kaanis (gateway chortens to village) are scattered in the valley. The valley still preserves the circumbulation the foot steps of the great Buddhist Yogi Chyuchin Milarepa and circumbulation story of Guru Padmasambhava. Some resident of Tsum Valley reported that snow leopard, musk deer and the sign of ‘Yeti’, the abominable Snowman are often seen in Tsum valley. So we may get an opportunity to encounter with rare animals and mysterious Himalayan giant, the Yeti.

Trekking in Tsum Valley starts from Arughat after 7-8 hours drive from Kathmandu and end at the same place. Initially, the Tsum Valley Trekking Trail leads upstream along the Budhi Gandaki River passing through dense forest, terraced farmlands and beautiful settlements. After entering the Tsum Valley, we come across the changes in vegetation from dense subtropical to thin alpine forest, culturally rich and unique villages, beautiful landscapes and scenery. You will not only explore of the historical monasteries such as Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa and Dhephu Doma Gompa but also walk through the glacier. The visit to the Milarepa (Namkading) cave is itself the reward of Tsum valley Trek.
